What Road Are You On?

Mapping out a strategic plan that works

In the annual whirlwind of packed programming slates, evolving marketing efforts, and rotating board members, it’s easy to get sucked into the minutiae of the day-to-day management of a nonprofit, leaving little time for “big picture” thinking. Stepping back to reassess where you’re going is essential to long term success.

In this session, you’ll learn how to create a strategic plan that can act as a breadcrumb trail to guide your organization past the daily hurdles, enabling you to achieve more far-reaching goals.

We’ll tackle the strategic planning process in four parts:

  1. Determining Strategic Direction: Somewhere between that senior advisor that can’t shake the memories of your organization’s glory days and that young millennial on your board who’s desperate for change, lay the kernels of ideas that will take your organization to the next level.

  2. The 5 Building Blocks of Creating a Strategic Plan: Strategic planning is part science + part art + part “thing you know you ought to do but don’t want to.” But it can also be fun and a great way to invigorate your organization.

  3. Implementation, Accountability, and Evolution: For most nonprofits, writing down the dreams isn’t the problem; it’s turning them into reality. We’re going to talk about the challenges and strategies for getting plans implemented, establishing accountability, and packaging up your work so the next generation of your organization’s board leadership can keep the ball rolling.

  4. Guerilla Consulting: Your homework for this workshop is to bring an idea, question, or challenge that applies to your own organization. You’ll have some time to work through your thoughts about it in small groups.
